Boat Fishing for Beginners
Boat fishing takes you out to where the fish gather. You can target big fish you'd rarely reach from shore.
Booking and boarding
Most charter boats are booked ahead and leave port at a set time. In Korea you fill in a passenger list and show ID before boarding, so bring your ID. Follow the captain's instructions and wear a life jacket on deck at all times.
Seasickness
- Sleep well the night before and don't eat too much before leaving.
- Take seasickness medicine before you board, not after you feel sick.
- On deck, look at the distant horizon rather than at things close by.
Popular boat targets
Hairtail caught under lights at night, olive flounder and rockfish on the bottom, pink red sea bream, Pacific cod in winter, and hard-pulling yellowtail and amberjack. Bluefin tuna is the dream fish, targeted with specialist jigging in some waters.
Gear
Many boats rent gear, but if you bring your own you'll need a boat rod and reel suited to your target. For deep water, anglers often use electric reels and multicolor PE braid that shows the depth. Rigs differ by species, so ask the captain when you book.
