Looks and how to tell it apart

A long, protruding snout with a pair of barbels. Rows of small black spots along its silver sides tell it apart from the steed barbel. Usually 15 to 25cm.

Where it lives

Lives on mixed sand and gravel bottoms in the middle reaches of rivers, swimming near the bottom to eat aquatic insects and small creatures. It spawns from late spring to early summer.

When it bites

Bites well by day from late spring to autumn when the water is warm.

Catching one for real

Drift worms through sand and gravel riffles in the middle reaches. It's also a classic catch when drifting a rig downstream in moving water.

A regular catch when drifting a rig down moving water. Drift a worm on a small hook along the bottom and you'll feel a sharp tug.

Rules to follow

No nationwide closed season or size limit under the Inland Water Fisheries Act is known, but local ordinances or no-fishing zones may apply, so check notices on site.
