About this fish

A sea eel known in Korea as 'anago'. White dots run along its lateral line, and it leaves the sandy bottom at night to feed.

Looks and how to tell it apart

A long, snake-like body without scales, with a row of white dots along the lateral line. Gray-brown above and white below. Usually 40 to 90cm.

Where it lives

Lives on sandy and muddy bottoms near shore. It hides in sand or rock crevices by day and comes out at night to eat small fish, shrimp and worms. Its young drift through the sea flat and transparent, like willow leaves.

When it bites

Bites well after dark from summer to autumn, when the water is warm.

Catching one for real

Cast ragworms or fish strips onto sandy bottoms at night and wait. Its body is very slimy, so hold it with a towel or gloves.

At night, cast a ledger rig with ragworm or fish strips onto sand and wait. Once hooked it coils and twists the line, so reel in quickly. It's very slimy, so hold it with a towel or gloves.
