About this fish

It looks like the greenling but has five lateral lines on each side. You can find it on breakwater and rocky bottoms all year round.

Looks and how to tell it apart

Like the greenling, but with five lateral lines on each side. Its color ranges from brown to gray-brown or yellowish depending on where it lives. Usually 20 to 40cm, bigger than the greenling.

Where it lives

Lives on rocky bottoms and kelp beds near shore. It spawns from late autumn to winter, when males turn yellow and guard eggs stuck to rocks.

When it bites

Caught all year, especially in spring and autumn. November and December, its spawning season, are closed.

Catching one for real

Drop ragworms on rocky bottoms at breakwaters and rocky shores. November and December are closed, and fish 20cm or smaller must be released.

The basic rig is a bottom rig with ragworm dropped between rocks at breakwaters and rocky shores. It also takes small soft plastics worked along the bottom.

Rules to follow

Fat greenling has a closed season from November 1 to December 31, and fish 20cm or smaller may not be taken. Rules can change, so check before you go.
