About this fish
It looks just like the opaleye, but its tail is longer and more deeply forked. It lives on rocky shores of offshore islands with strong currents and grows bigger and stronger.
Looks and how to tell it apart
Just like the opaleye, but with a longer, more deeply forked tail and a black edge on the gill cover. Usually 30 to 50cm, sometimes over 60cm.
Where it lives
Lives on rocky shores of offshore islands with strong currents, mostly around Jeju and remote southern islands, eating seaweed and small crustaceans.
When it bites
Bites well on offshore island rocks from autumn to winter, by day.
Catching one for real
Float fish with krill and groundbait on offshore island rocks. It dives hard toward the rocks when hooked, so use a strong leader.
Target it with rocky-shore float fishing using krill and groundbait. It's stronger than the opaleye and dives hard for the rocks, so use a strong leader and rod.
Rules to follow
No nationwide closed season or size limit is known for the largescale blackfish (the opaleye has none in the law's table either). Offshore island rocks are dangerous, so always wear a life jacket.
