About this fish

A silver sea hunter with a big mouth. It roams rocky shores where waves break and river mouths, chasing small fish. Summer is its season.

Looks and how to tell it apart

A long, silver body and a big mouth. Young fish have small black spots on the back that fade as they grow. Usually 40 to 90cm, sometimes over 1m.

Where it lives

Roams rocky shores, breakwaters and river mouths, hunting anchovies, small fish and shrimp. It copes well with brackish water and sometimes swims up rivers.

When it bites

Summer is its season. It's most active at dusk and dawn on days when waves break white.

Catching one for real

At dusk or dawn, cast minnow lures where waves break white over the rocks. Once hooked, it leaps out of the water to shake the hook.

From the rocks, cast minnow lures that imitate small fish and work them through the waves. Once hooked it leaps and shakes its head to throw the hook, so never let the line go slack.
