About this fish
Officially the goldeye rockfish, a reddish-orange rockfish living in schools on deep reefs. On winter boat trips several can come up at once.
Looks and how to tell it apart
Officially the goldeye rockfish. Reddish orange with dark blotches and big eyes. Usually 15 to 30cm.
Where it lives
Lives in big schools on deep reefs tens of meters down or more. Like the Korean rockfish, it hatches eggs inside the body and gives birth to live young.
When it bites
A favorite boat target from winter to spring, when many boats run dedicated goldeye rockfish trips.
Catching one for real
From a boat, drop a multi-hook rig baited with krill or squid down to deep reefs. When one bites, wait a moment to load up a few more.
